Mel Toomey
You know you are leading when people around you are inspired by their own brilliance.
Biography
At Generative Leadership Group, Mel works with executives
who are committed to developing breakthrough as a strategic advantage.
Much of his current work centers on documenting the source of extraordinary
results.
Today he is best known for his work in organizational change, executive
coaching, and the development of organizational leaders.
In addition,
Mel is the principal designer of an accredited Master of Arts degree
in Organizational Leadership that sets new standards for
leadership education. He serves as an academic director and professor
at The Graduate Institute, working with other thought leaders to
provide accredited
master ’s degrees in new fields of study.
Mel’s work draws on
a diverse background. In the 1960s he was a major contributor to
the design of mortgage-backed securities. He helped establish
new practice areas in banking, including ways for East Coast thrift
institutions to invest in uninsured mortgage loans beyond their
established lending areas.
During this period he designed methods to handle government insured
loans; adopted industry-wide, they reduced time and cost by fifty
percent.
In the 1970s and 1980s his work in systems design led
to the development of the first automated software system for capital-intensive
industries
that provided concurrent cash and accrual accounting with financial
reporting based in logical views, a major breakthrough in its time.
It was during
this period that business leaders began asking Mel to work with
them on bringing creativity and innovation to their organizations.
In
1990 Mel founded Generative Leadership Group, a consultancy focused
on leadership development, large-scale systems change,
and innovation in organizations. In 2000 he co-founded the Center
for Leadership Studies,
a research organization dedicated to establishing leadership as
a profession.
Mel is convinced of three fundamental things regarding
leadership:
Anyone who commits to developing his or her leadership
can become a highly effective leader.
The idea that leadership
is a quality that some of us are born with - and others are not
- is unsupportable nonsense and a very
dangerous notion.
By bringing leadership into the realm of a profession,
we can stop learning it through trial-and-error, which has high
human cost and high financial cost.
This is why Mel was willing
to spend 12 years in pursuit of a home for a Master’s degree in Organizational
Leadership.
